Human Resources Management introduces learners to the five core functions that hold every HR operation together. This course gives learners a clear understanding of how HR serves both employees and the organization, how hiring and compensation decisions get made, and what employment law requires of employers at every stage of the employment relationship. Learners explore the complete employee lifecycle, from recruiting and onboarding through development, performance management, and departure. Throughout the course, learners apply practical techniques that build the judgment, legal awareness, and people skills that HR work demands.

Course Content:
-
This module introduces what HR is and why it sits at the centre of every organization. Learners examine the shift from personnel administration to strategic partnership, the two fronts HR works on at all times, and the five core functions that structure the rest of the course. The module closes by looking at the career paths open to HR professionals and the competencies that set strong ones apart.
-
This module walks learners through the full hiring cycle. It covers planning a recruitment before posting, writing a realistic job preview that sets honest expectations, and building a fair and consistent resume screening system. Learners then explore structured interviewing, including behavioural and situational questions, and how to keep every stage of the process compliant with the Alberta Human Rights Act.
-
This module examines total rewards and the thinking behind pay decisions. Learners compare compensation philosophies, distinguish the benefits Alberta employers must provide by law from those they offer to stay competitive, and work through how HR balances what employees value against a real operating budget.
-
This module covers what happens after the hire. Learners study the four functions of effective onboarding, build structured learning pathways that carry an employee beyond their first weeks, and explore how ongoing feedback and development keep capable people in the organization rather than pushing them toward the exit.
-
This module grounds learners in the legal framework HR operates within in Alberta. It covers six key legal topics including wages and hours, discrimination and the duty to accommodate, workplace health and safety, mandatory benefits, work authorization, and labour relations. Learners examine employer, supervisor, and worker safety obligations, the hierarchy of hazard controls, incident and near-miss investigation, psychological safety, and the criminal liability employers carry under the Westray Law.
-
This module covers the part of HR that tests judgment most. Learners work through progressive disciplinary action, performance improvement plans, and conflict resolution, then move into the full offboarding process. The module covers voluntary resignations, terminations with and without cause, layoffs, and what Alberta law requires on notice, termination pay, and final earnings.
